We Don't Publish Recipes.

Every serious food publication on Earth publishes recipes. We think that's the least interesting thing you can do with food.

Don't Be Hangry is a food journalism site with one rule: no recipes. Not because recipes aren't useful — they are — but because the most interesting thing about any dish is never the recipe. It's the story. Who made it first. What it survived. What it cost someone to keep making it when the world around them changed. The recipe is the least of it.

We cover dishes, ingredients, markets, and techniques — not as consumer guides but as cultural objects. The dashi piece isn't telling you how to make dashi. It's telling you why dashi matters, what it replaced, and what understanding it reveals about Japanese culture that no amount of recipe-following ever would. That's the project. It turns out to be inexhaustible.

The name is a joke with a point. Don't be hangry — don't let hunger make you eat without curiosity. The best meal you ever had was probably attached to a story. We're here for the story.
